Humanitarian Responses and Livelihoods

ASAL communities in Kenya continue to face recurring humanitarian crises caused by both natural and human-made disasters. Droughts, floods, desert locust invasions, conflicts, and the growing impacts of climate change have increased vulnerability among communities, particularly women, children, and marginalized groups. These challenges have created a growing demand for humanitarian assistance while stretching the resources available for effective response.

Women and girls are often the most affected during emergencies, facing increased risks of gender-based violence, child marriage, displacement, food insecurity, and limited access to education. At the same time, communities frequently lack the resources and support needed to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. Pastoralist Girls Initiative (PGI) works to strengthen community resilience through humanitarian response, disaster preparedness, and recovery interventions. We collaborate with government institutions, county governments, development partners, and local communities to ensure timely, coordinated, and sustainable support for vulnerable populations.

Activities include: cash transfers, secondary school bursaries, mentorship, back-to-school kits, catch-up classes, teacher coaching and training, family travel grants, community conversations with IGA, solar lamps, and digital learning tools.

Sustainable Livelihoods

Livelihoods across ASAL regions are increasingly threatened by climate change, prolonged droughts, erratic rainfall, and environmental degradation. The loss of livestock, crop failures, and reduced economic opportunities have left many households struggling to meet their basic needs.

PGI is committed to supporting communities, particularly women and youth, to build sustainable and diversified livelihoods that can withstand environmental and economic shocks. Through skills development, entrepreneurship support, climate-smart practices, and economic empowerment initiatives, we help communities strengthen their resilience and improve their quality of life.

Our Livelihoods Interventions

  • Women’s economic empowerment programs
  • Income-generating activities and entrepreneurship support
  • Climate-smart agriculture and livestock management
  • Skills development and vocational training
  • Financial inclusion and savings groups
  • Community resilience and adaptive capacity building

Working closely with county governments, communities, and development partners, PGI is helping create resilient, self-reliant, and prosperous ASAL communities capable of adapting to a changing climate while securing sustainable futures for generations to come.

Enabling Prosperous Futures.
