Who We Are

Two Decades of Championing Pastoralist Women & Girls

Pastoralist Girls Initiative (PGI) was founded in 2001 to fill a critical gap in championing the plight of pastoralist women and girls — particularly on education, food security, human rights, and economic empowerment.

Today, PGI is a registered NGO operating across Garissa and Tana River Counties, partnering with county governments, international donors, and civil society to deliver integrated, community-led development programmes.

Wasichana Wetu Wafaulu

The Girls Education Challenge – Transition project (locally known as Wasichana Wetu Wafaulu — “Our Girls Succeed”) is PGI’s most ambitious education programme.

Funded by DFID through EDT, it supports 79 schools across Tana River County, providing cash transfers, bursaries, mentorship, solar lamps, and digital learning tools to over 8,100 girls.

Education

From the Manyatta to Medical School

Amina grew up in a remote pastoralist settlement in Fafi sub-county with no access to secondary school. Through PGI’s scholarship programme and mentorship support, she secured a bursary and is now pursuing a nursing degree at a Kenyan university — the first girl in her village to attend university.
